Mill Per., 8, Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod region, Russia, 603001

Description:

The Annunciation Monastery is the oldest monastery in Nizhny Novgorod and one of the oldest in Russia. During its history, the monastery has experienced several destructions, was repeatedly rebuilt and today is an architectural ensemble of white-stone buildings.

The monastery was founded in 1221 by Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich, during the laying of the city itself. Shortly after construction, the monastery was looted by the Mordovians and restored only a hundred years later. The monastery was partially destroyed by snowfall, three fires, and after the revolution of 1918 was closed and turned into warehouses and a planetarium.

In 1993, the monastery was returned to the church and restored, a theological school and an Orthodox museum were opened under it. Also in the monastery you can see a modern list of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God.
