Nizhny Novgorod

The Temple of the Holy Mother of God

Russia, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Christmas 34.

Description:

This beautiful temple was built at the expense of Stroganov merchants twice, as in 1701 there was a fire and the church was restored anew. The restored church was consecrated in 1719 by Archbishop Pitirim of Nizhny Novgorod.

Experts talk about a special style - "Stroganov baroque", characterized by special monumentality and luxurious decorative decoration. This five-domed temple has two tiers, including a three-aspid altar, a prayer hall, a columnless refectory and a papert. Under the refectory there were three rooms - storerooms. A special charm to this temple gives amazing white stone carvings on windows, portals and columns.

This temple had a difficult fate: several times it experienced fires, temporary closure by order of Peter I, and in the Soviet era it was completely closed.

In the premises of the church there was a pharmacy warehouse, which allowed to preserve the unique iconostasis of the XVII century. In 1993, the Nativity Church was again consecrated by Metropolitan Nicholas of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas in the presence of a huge number of people. At present, services have resumed and a women’s spiritual school, a Sunday school, is operating.
