The Temple of the Holy Prophet Elijah

Seeing that the enemy approached Novgorod, quickly took possession of the Big Village. I realized that the city could not defend its small garrison and there was nowhere to wait for help. Simsky decides to sell his life to his enemies. The population was in panic, waiting for imminent death and brutal captivity. At this terrible moment, the voivode remembered that prisoners of Lithuanian streltsy were in prison for several years, whom he called to his side. The Lithuanians agreed to the voivode's proposal. At the crucial moment, when the enemies were ready to storm the city, the soldier Fyodor-Litovets shot Mirza - the leader of the Nagays. Mahmet Amen was unable to subjugate the Nagays to his power, and they, unwilling to submit to the power of others, directed their weapons at the Allies. Instead of attacking, the enemy was forced to retreat.

On the site of the defeat of Mirza in 1506, a wooden temple of the Prophet Elijah was erected.

The Ilyinsk Church is famous not only for its military history, but also for merchants. In 1817, a fair opened in Nizhny Novgorod for the festival of Elijah the Prophet. And the merchants prayed to the saint for a good bargain. Earlier, in the parish of the church settled diners who brought goods from afar.

In 1995, the temple was returned to believers, and now its restoration is underway.
