Makariev monastery

Russia, Nizhny Novgorod region, Lyskovsky district, Makaryevo

Description:

In 1439 the monastery was ravaged by the Tatars. It was renewed only in the 1620s by the Unzhensky and Sviyazhsky miracle worker. The successful location of the Makariev Monastery contributed to the fact that bargaining soon arose here. Officially, the Makariev Fair was established in 1641, when, by the decree of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, all tax revenues from the fair were given to the monastery “for candles, incense, church buildings and brethren for food.”

This ensured the rapid growth of the monastery’s prosperity and contributed to the construction of temples. To protect the monastery and the fair, a fortress wall was built around. Not far from the monastery there was a settlement, which in 1779 was transformed into the district town of Makariev. The first church in the monastery was erected in the name of the Ascension of the Lord - it was on this great feast that the Monk Macarius received freedom from the Horde Khan Ulu-Mahmet.

The majestic ensemble of the monastery, formed in the XVII century. The dominant structure is the majestic Trinity Cathedral, built in 1658 and preserving the painting of the late XVII century. An organic part of the ensemble is the Assumption Church with a tent bell tower, the Makariev Church, built in the spirit of classicism. The completeness of the ensemble is given by white-stone walls and towers, which are a bright example of ancient Russian defense architecture. Divine services in the monastery are performed daily. The main shrine of the monastery is the icon of St. Macarius with a particle of relics.

Getting to Makarevsky Monastery will not be difficult. In summer, river cruises are especially popular.
