Small Underground River Pochaina
The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Description:
The Nizhny Novgorod small underground river Pochaina is a right-wing Volga tributary flowing near the walls of the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod. In the stone pipe-collector river bed was placed only in the middle of the XIX century and was the main source of water for the city. According to legend, the river waters were covered with a stone that prevented their release and protected Nizhny Novgorod from terrible grief.
Interestingly, according to legend, the river received its name from the founder of the city Yuri Vsevolodovich. It was he who saw in it a copy of the famous clean river of the same name, which flowed between the mountains into the waters of the Dnieper. Pochaina is translated from Old Russian as “wait”, so there were city watches and outposts. Today, Pochainskaya Street and the ravine serve as a reminder of the river, and the brewery and wine and vodka factory were named after it at one time.
