Nikolskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin
Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod region
Description:
Nikolskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was considered the main center of defense of the southern side of the fortress wall in the 16th century. The area between her and Dmitrievskaya was shot from one of the towers. The wall was protected by a moat, with its help (in peacetime) it was possible to enter the Kremlin through a hinged bridge. Nowadays, the old entrance to the Kremlin is working, although the bridge leads to it is ordinary, pedestrian.
The Nikolskaya Tower received its name from the church located opposite, dedicated to Nicholas Ugodnik. The communists destroyed the temple in the last century, so in 2014 the chapel of this saint was built on this site.
At the moment, the Nikolskaya Tower has opened an exhibition "Remember the war", telling about the events and heroes of the Great Patriotic War, there are also sections dedicated to the events in Chechnya and Afghanistan. Anyone can visit the exhibition for free, but for the excursion you need to buy special tickets.
