Nizhny Novgorod

Lake Svetloyar and the city of Kitezh

Description:

On the Volga River there is a beautiful lake Svetloyar, one of the deepest lakes of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The water is cleanest, coldest.

There is such a legend that in the depths you can see the walls of monasteries, the domes of churches, hear a slightly noticeable ringing. This is a phenomenon of the mysterious city of Kitezh, which disappeared during the invasion of the Tatar-Mongols. When Russia was not yet baptized, it was considered a sacred place. When Khan-Baty found out about his existence, he called to conquer. When the army approached the city, they noticed that it was not fortified, and victory would be easy. But when the Tatar-Mongol approached, the city disappeared among the waters. As they say, the water did not get into the city itself, only hid from outsiders.

Mystical assumptions still exist today. Scientists are talking about an anomaly enveloping this place. Locals talk about people in strange clothes, how travelers disappear.
