Monument to Maxim Gorky

gorky Square, Nizhny Novgorod

Description:

The monument to Maxim Gorky is located on Nizhny Novgorod Gorky Square. The monument was opened in 1952.

The sculpture is a bronze figure 7 meters high, over which the sculptors Mukhin, Lebedev and Steller worked. The sculpture was cast at the Leningrad Monument Sculpture factory. The figure of Gorky is installed on a four-sided pedestal and depicts a young image of the writer who lived at that time in Nizhny Novgorod. It was at that time that he wrote the famous “Song of the Petrel”.

Bitter, laying his hands behind his back, proudly stands to meet all the winds. The cloak thrown over the shoulders seems to flutter from the flying wind, and its large folds create a beautiful silhouette of the monument and enrich the strict vertical of the figure. Hands intercepting one another, speak of the writer’s inner excitement, restrained by volitional effort.

Other monuments to Gorky are located on the Fedorovsky embankment, in the Oak Park, in the Kulibin Park and in the courtyard of the Gorky Museum “Kashirina House”.
