Monument to the dead Chernobyl residents of Nizhny Novgorod "The Grieving Angel"
Fair pass, 10, Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod region
Description:
In Nizhny Novgorod there is a monument “Sorrowing Angel”, which in 2009 was opened by Patriarch Kirill. It has a peculiarity, despite the fact that statues of this kind are in other cities and similar in appearance. However, Nizhny Novgorod residents established their angel of grief not just about something abstract, but specifically in honor of the dead Chernobyl residents of Nizhny Novgorod.
The two-meter main statue, which stands on a three-meter pedestal, is surrounded by granite plates. They are engraved with quotations from the Holy Scriptures and the names of those who suffered during and during the accident at the nuclear power plant and its conservation.
The idea to build such a memorial in the city belongs to the local Archbishop George. It was he who expressed the opinion that each monument should have a specific spiritual meaning.
The sculpture was ordered in Moscow by the Nizhny Novgorod diocese. In 2008, the land in front of the Old Fair Cathedral was allocated for the installation of the memorial, and the diocese fully took over the organization of installation works.
The memorial is on the Fairway.
