Lobachevsky University

Description:

Officially, the Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod was founded in mid-January 1916 as one of three public higher education institutions conceived by the government. Moreover, the university became the first higher institution in the city. It was assumed that there will be an opportunity to study able immigrants from poor families. The idea was good, but it was too late to implement it: a year later, against the background of class confrontation, the Bolsheviks came to power. The Executive Committee decided to establish a state university in the Lower University.

In September 1918, students began to study at 10 faculties, two months later a separate faculty was opened in Sormovo. But already in 1922, officials of Glavprofobra tried to close the educational institution, citing the difficult economic situation in the country. However, the authorities of the province did not allow this and included the funding of the university in the local budget.

However, in the thirties, the university ceased to exist as a single educational unit, it was divided into several specialized institutes. A year later, the university began to revive. Now NSU is the largest educational institution uniting a whole network of institutes.

The central buildings of the university are located on Gagarin Avenue. You can get here by bus number 12.
