Description:
The Novorossiysk Museum was founded in 1916 and was originally called the Museum of Nature and History of the Black Sea Coast of the Caucasus. Thanks to the generous donations of many benefactors, the museum began to develop rapidly, and its funds were replenished with new interesting exhibits. By the 1940s, the Local Lore Museum of Novorossiysk, with funds including about 7 thousand items and a huge library, was one of the largest scientific and educational institutions in the Kuban, and its museum exposition was located in 16 halls.
The Great Patriotic War dealt a terrible blow to the museum - the building was destroyed, unique collections were looted, and the scientific library was almost completely destroyed. Part of the collection was miraculously sent to Tbilisi, and the revival of the museum began with the end of the war. In 1952, the former premises were transferred to the museum, where a new exposition opened, and two years later, active expeditionary activity began.
In 1977, the Local History Museum received several more houses, and soon a new exhibition hall opened. This event left a bright mark on the cultural life of the city, because now residents and guests of Novorossiysk have the opportunity to see firsthand the unique exhibits and collections of the best museums of the country, to get acquainted with the works of local photographers and artists. Today, the museum has more than 150 thousand items of storage. The exposition reconstructs the picture of the development of Novorossiysk and its surroundings from ancient times to the present. A separate place is occupied by unique archaeological collections, which are constantly replenished thanks to annual expeditions.
