Narym Square, Novosibirsk, Russia

Description:

November 30, 2011 in the Kalininsky district of Novosibirsk was installed a memorial complex called "Conquerors of the atom". It is dedicated not only to the liquidators of radiation accidents and catastrophes, but also to veterans of the nuclear industry, as well as enterprises and people of the city who have made a huge contribution to its rapid development. Not far from the complex, in Narym Square, a monument was erected “In memory of the victims of radiation disasters, accidents and tests of nuclear weapons”. At its inauguration, the mayor of the city, Vladimir Gorodetsky, said that this memorial will unite local residents and guests of the city, making the problems faced by many victims of radiation accidents more understandable and obvious.

1,750 Novosibirsk residents took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the horrific accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, almost 800 of whom became disabled, and about 500 are no longer alive. Relatives of the victims gather annually at the monument to honor the memory of those who, sacrificing their lives, saved the lives of hundreds of other people. The monument is made of bronze in the form of a sign of radiation, at the expense of the city budget.
