KBZD and rock "Sails" - Circular Baikal Railway

KBZD was called “the golden buckle of the steel belt of Russia” – it was the most complex and expensive railway project of tsarist Russia.
The 84-kilometer-long section from Kultuk to Port Baikal was in turn the most difficult section of the BCJ, but today it is a dead end, and is used mainly as a tourist attraction.
This section is the most beautiful and unique railway in the world.
The rock "Sails" is a viewing platform on the steep rocky shore of Lake Baikal, which rises above the KBZD and from there undoubtedly the best views of this structure.
Route content and timing:
Departure in the morning from Irkutsk by car to the area "Dark Pad", from where the main hiking trail begins to KBZD. The first 2 kilometers pass through the forests of the Baikal National Park.
Then the trail goes to the shore of Lake Baikal to the village of Old Angasolka.
From here, we will need to walk a little radially to the observation deck on the Sails rock, admire the views of KBZD and Baikal from a bird's eye view, then return to Old Angasolka.
In Old Angasolka in high season you can have lunch in a cafe, or lunch is arranged right by the railway at one of the equipped places for a picnic.
After lunch, we will slowly walk to the village of Kultuk, on the way inspecting various unique engineering structures - galleries, tunnels, bridges and retaining walls. This section is about 6 kilometers long, but it passes easily and quickly - it is always a smooth and good path.
In the village of Kultuk, the walking part of the route is completed at the stele dedicated to the Circum-Baikal Railway. There we will be waiting for a car to travel back to Irkutsk. Another option is to return to the Dark Fall.
Total walk - 12 kilometers, by car 150 kilometers.
The route is suitable for visiting at any time of the year!
