Tageran steppe

Description:

Tazheran steppe, located on the west coast of Lake Baikal within the Baikal National Park, is a unique natural enclave. This dry steppe, surrounded by taiga and mountains, was formed due to a special microclimate and geological structure. The territory has been the land of Buryats for centuries, as evidenced by numerous archaeological sites, including ancient ob (sacred places) and cave paintings (petroglyphs), dating back several millennia.

The geological uniqueness of the steppe is exceptional. Here, on a relatively small area, rare minerals (more than 150 species), exits of ancient marble rocks and numerous karst relief forms are concentrated. Tazheran caves, such as Dream and Aya, formed in soluble rocks, are especially famous. For several decades, these objects have been an important testing ground for scientific geological and archaeological research, revealing the history of natural processes in the Baikal region.

The history of human interaction with this territory goes back thousands of years. After the era of ancient petroglyphs, these lands were developed by Buryat families for nomadic cattle breeding. In the XVII-XVIII centuries, with the arrival of Russian explorers, the region became part of the Russian state, but retained its sacred significance for the indigenous population. In the XX century, the uniqueness of Tazheran was officially recognized: first the first caves were opened, and in 1986 the territory became part of the Baikal National Park, which provided it with protection and the status of an object combining natural and cultural heritage.
