Located in the center of the Kola Peninsula. Reliefs - foothills and low mountains. Here is Kolozero, its area is 65 square kilometers. Olenegorsk was founded in August 1947. It owes its birth to a large iron ore deposit discovered by geologists in 1932, and its name to the nearby Olenya railway station (date of formation - 1916). The working village was transformed into the city of Olenegorsk on March 27, 1957. In August 1981, the city of Olenegorsk with a subordinate territory separated from the territory subordinated to the city of Monchegorsk. The distance from Olenegorsk to Murmansk is 112 kilometers. The territory is 1.7 thousand square kilometers (1.2% of the territory of the Murmansk region), including the land of the city - 38.8 square kilometers. The number of permanent population as of January 1, 1999 was 39.2 thousand people (3.9% of the population of the Murmansk region), including the city of Olenegorsk - 28.4 thousand people. The population density is 23 people per 1 square kilometer. In the subordinate territory there are 8 rural settlements. The region is rich in iron ore reserves. Mined at the Olenegorsk ore deposits contains relatively little iron (an average of 28%). The positive properties of ore include the fact that there are few harmful impurities (phosphorus and sulfur). This allows for enrichment without causing significant damage to the ecology of the city. Olenegorsk is the center of the iron ore industry in the Arctic. One of the largest industrial companies in the region is located here - OJSC "Olenegorsk Mining and Processing Plant" (commissioned in 1955). The plant produces and processes iron-containing ores. It consists of a mine and a processing plant. The field is developed in an open way, horizontal layers, sequentially from top to bottom. Currently, work is underway to prepare for the development of the Olenegorskoye field by mining method. The main product is iron ore concentrate (iron concentration – 67%). The production of iron ore superconcentrate is mastered - an excellent raw material for obtaining pure iron powders. The iron content is increased to 72%. The plant also produces ferrito-strontium powders. From the waste of production, silicate bricks are made, gravel production is organized. For further processing, iron ore concentrate is supplied to metallurgical plants in various regions of Russia, the main consumer is Severstal OJSC (Cherepovets). In the city there are enterprises of mechanical engineering and metalworking, food industry, construction materials industry. On the subordinate territory are the highway and the railway St. Petersburg – Murmansk. Suburban and intraurban transportation of goods and passengers is carried out by Lovozero ATP of Murmansk-Autotrans. Olenegortsy rightfully proud of its covered ice Palace with artificial ice, which hosts competitions in figure skating and hockey.
