Buchholz Square

p. Buchholtsa, Omsk, Omsk region 644024, Russian Federation

Description:

Buchholz Square is the central square of Omsk, a popular place for walks and recreation of citizens. It is located in the heart of the city, near the river station. The history of this place is closely connected with the history of Omsk, because it was here that the fortress was laid. This happened at the beginning of the XVIII century, when a detachment headed by Ivan Dmitrievich Buchholtz was sent from Tobolsk by order of the Emperor. Having reached the confluence of the Irtysh and Omi rivers, the soldiers were too tired, and the command decided to build a fortress.

Now in the very center of the square stands a huge ball, which depicts scenes telling about the development of Siberia. There are no traces of the fortress, but a radio mast was installed exactly where the ball is located during the Civil War. It was installed during the stay in Omsk headquarters of A.V. Kolchak. This is another interesting story from history, because the maintenance of this radio mast was engaged in engineer Zworykin, famous for the fact that during his emigration to America, invented television. The mast was torn down by the Communists, but history remains.

Buchholz Square is surrounded by numerous city attractions, attractions, cafes, restaurants, cinema, bowling. Its main feature is the complete absence of cars and silence, which can be enjoyed to the fullest.
