Statue of Luba
ooh Lenina, 7, Omsk, Omsk region 644043, Russian Federation
Description:
The statue "Luba" is one of the most popular attractions of Omsk. Located a few tens of meters from the legendary “slasher Stepanych”, it attracts numerous tourists who consider it their duty to take pictures with a bronze statue. The monument decorating the city center was erected in honor of the wife of the Governor of Omsk Gustav von Gasfordt.
The story of real Luba is quite sad. Fate measured her short century - she died at a young age, catching tuberculosis. In Omsk, the young wife of the governor came in the middle of the XIX century, leaving her father’s home and her lover, whom her father considered unpromising. Soon after her arrival, Lyuba began to yearn for her home, relatives and her beloved young man. Darker than the clouds she walked around the house, and soon fell ill and died.
When it was decided to install the monument, its authors had a hard time, because not a single portrait or photograph of the governor’s wife has survived to this day. Therefore, the statue sculptors made, based on the memories of contemporaries and preserved evidence. The memory of Lyuba was immortalized not only by sculpture - in the XIX century the city grove was named in her honor, as well as one of the city streets.
