Holy Assumption Cathedral
d. Omsk, st. International, 12
Description:
Construction of the cathedral began in 1891, with the participation of the future Russian Emperor Nicholas II, who traveled around the country at this time. The project was based on the project of the Savior on Blood, located in St. Petersburg. The Assumption Cathedral was built in the very center of the city of Omsk, where the city grove used to be.
The construction lasted for seven years, later a garden was laid around the temple. The temple was empty for a long time after the advent of Soviet power, and in 1933. It even removed the bells for melting for the needs of the country, and then decided to demolish it. Blowing up the temple, a square was placed in its place and called it “Peers’ Park”.
Only in 2005, the government of the Omsk region decided to return the cathedral to the city as a historical and cultural monument of the city on the Irtysh. The recreated Assumption Cathedral was solemnly consecrated in July 2007.
