At the origins of the local history museum were the official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs F. P. Shangion-Garting, Master of Philosophy TomashZan, Xendz M. Zelenko, as well as the author of the “Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language” V. I. Dahl.
By the end of the XIX century, the museum collection numbered about 100 thousand units, among them the most valuable were zoological and paleontological collections, collections of national costumes, ancient gold and silver coins and medals, a scientific library of 40 thousand volumes.
In 1920, the museum entered the Kyrgyz Republic, and in 1924 again passed to Russia and as a result of economic and cultural demarcation, 80% of the museum collection in 1927 went to Kazakhstan.
Today’s regional museum belongs to the type of “traditional museums”. The classical concept of museology, which developed in the middle of the XX century, defines this type as a combination of a specific research institute and cultural institutions.
