Orenburg Regional Museum of Local History

Orenburg region, Orenburg, St. Soviet, 28

About the company:

Orenburg Governor’s Museum of Local History is one of the oldest museums in Russia, established in 1830 by Orenburg military governor P.P. Sukhtelen. The idea of creating a museum had an applied orientation - the region was not actually studied, which created serious difficulties for management, so the focus was not on creating collections as such and the actual exposition, but on accumulating and collecting previously disparate objects in a single place.

Today, the museum is located in a building that is a monument of architecture of the XIX century of republican significance. In the halls of the museum there are expositions telling about the formation of the city of Orenburg and the province, about the development of the economy and trade in the region of the XVIII-XX centuries, about the military history of Orenburg, the development of education and science, about the culture of the region. The department of nature presents flora and fauna, as well as minerals of the Orenburg region.

Today the museum is the largest in the region repository of monuments of material and spiritual culture of Orenburg region with extensive archaeological, ethnographic, paleontological collections, herbariums, photographs, documents, handwritten and old printed books, objects of religious worship, coins, medals, works of art.
