Temple of Friendship

Pavlovsk, Pavlovsk Park

Description:

The Temple of Friendship is located in Pavlovsk Park in the bend of the Slavyanka River. In fact, this is not a temple at all, but a pavilion stylized as an ancient temple, created in 1781 in the park for chamber concerts. Charles Cameron, chief architect and designer of Pavlovsk Park, began his work with the creation of this temple. The rotunda temple is located on the high bank of the river, which makes it visible from afar even from behind the trees.

The Temple of Friendship is made in the form of an ancient temple with a blank outer wall without windows and with a single door. It is always closed to tourists. Around the temple there are 16 Doric columns, which grow directly from the basement. The walls of the temple are painted in ochre color, the roof and columns are snow-white. Once in one of the niches in the wall was a statue of Catherine II in the image of Ceres - a copy of the work of Rachett, which was once in the Tsarskoye Selo Grotto. Today there is no statue, it can be seen only in the design sketches of the temple in the Pavlovsk Palace Museum. The walls today are decorated only with a light stucco ornament.
