ooh Chkalova, 26, Penza region 440052, Russian Federation
Description:
The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God is located in a historical place - once it was called the Starodragun Sloboda, since dragoons who served in the Russian army lived here with their families. The construction of the first Pokrovskaya church, which was wooden, took place almost at the same time with the settlement of the settlement.
In 1765, the wooden church was replaced by a stone church with a four-tiered baroque bell tower. Curiously, today the Church of the Intercession is the only Baroque monument in the city that has survived to this day. Initially, the bell tower stood separately from the church, but in 1856 they were connected by a refectory. At the same time, the interior of the church was decorated “under marble”, and the facades are decorated in an eclectic style. A few more years later, at the northern and southern facades, the aisles of the Meeting of the Lord and the icons of the Vladimir Mother of God appeared. All extensions that appeared in the XIX century were made using the techniques of ancient Russian architecture.
In 1931, the Soviet authorities decided to close the Pokrovsky church, which was converted into a cinema and then used as warehouses. Over the next forty years, the church was in a deplorable state and almost collapsed. A long and difficult restoration began, which was completed in 1998, and the church again opened its doors for believers.
