The Chapel of Mary of Egypt

Penza region, Tarkhana estate

Description:

The Church of Mary of Egypt is part of the museum complex of the manor "Tarkhan". A small building of the Empire-style church was erected on the site of the first manor house, in which the mother and grandfather of Mikhail Lermontov died. The Church of Mary of Egypt was consecrated in November 1820 in the name of St. Mary of Egypt, who was the patroness of the mother of the famous poet Maria Mikhailovna Lermontova.

During his visit to the Church of Mary of Egypt, Lermontov visited more than once - he attended communion and confession, during the baptism of infants, met peasants from Tarkhan and the surrounding villages. And in 1835 he attended a "thank you prayer service", arranged in honor of his arrival in Tarkhany.

In 1929, a village club was organized in the church building, and a lecture hall opened ten years later. Since 1944, the Church of Mary of Egypt became part of the Museum-Estate of M.Y. Lermontov. Here is an exposition of materials related to the life of the estate. Restoration work in the church was completed in 2006 and it was re-consecrated.

The exhibition in the Church of Mary of Egypt presents a wide range of documents telling about the people with whom the life of the future poet was connected, and about the events that took place in the temple. Church records, metric books, copies of royal decrees and orders, local icons, among which the most interesting is the icon of the XVII century with saints for November, when Mikhailov Day was celebrated.
