Penza Trinity Societal Women's Monastery

ooh Kirova, 25, Penza, Penza region 440000, Russian Federation

Description:

Trinity sociable convent is located in the central part of Penza. It was founded in 1689-1692. The main temple was the wooden church of the Life-giving Trinity. Built in 1702, it was the first building of the monastery complex. Materials for the construction of the Trinity Church were taken from the remains of the Savior Cathedral located in the fortress. After 15 years, the construction of the second temple was completed - the wooden church of St. Alexander of Svir.

The first major reconstruction of the monastery took place in 1746, when both churches were rebuilt in stone. However, in 1770 there was a fire that destroyed most of the buildings. Both temples were completely dismantled and rebuilt. At the end of the XVIII century, the monastery was surrounded by a stone fence, and a few years later stone cells were erected. By the middle of the XIX century, towers appeared at the corners of the fence. Trinity church was dismantled in 1900, and over the next ten years rebuilt in the "Russian" style. Thanks to its expressive composition and luxurious decorative decoration, the church became a real decoration in the architectural ensemble of the monastery.

Once upon a time there was a cemetery at the monastery, where the Decembrist I.N. Gorstkin was buried. Unfortunately, his grave has not survived to this day. In 1927 the monastery was closed and returned to the diocese only in 1994.
