The Upper Garden of Peterhof
peterhof, st. Divorce (Museum-Reserve "Peterhof")
Description:
The upper garden in Peterhof is located between the southern facade of the Grand Palace and the St. Petersburg highway. In the time of Peter I, it first served as a garden - vegetables, medicinal herbs, greens were grown here. In three ponds of the garden, which served as reservoirs of water for the fountains of the Great Cascade, fish were bred.
The situation changed in the second half of the XVIII century, during the expansion of the Grand Palace, the garden was expanded according to the project of Rastrelli. The features of the regular park appeared: lime alleys, gazebos, patterned flower beds with plants in tubs, closed bosquets with fruit plants, trolley galleries, fountains, gilded statues, sundials were put in the stalls.
In the Upper Garden there is a composition of one small cascade and five waterfalls. These are paired fountains of Square ponds "Adam" and "Eve", fountains "Mezheumny", "Oak", fountain "Neptune" with the Apollo cascade.
Restoration of the garden stall was carried out in 1926, and in the 1960s the garden was restored according to plans and historical documents.
