Peterhof, St. Petersburg

Description:

The bronze monument to Peter I is installed in Peterhof at the intersection of Monplaisir and Marlin alleys. The monument in full growth rises on a high profiled granite pedestal. The monument is made according to the plaster model of the sculptor M.M. Antokolsky. The granite pedestal was made by the St. Petersburg workshop of G. Botto. The monument was opened on May 8, 1884.

The bronze figure of the king faces Monplesir, the head is proudly raised, the right leg protrudes forward, in his left hand he holds a spyglass, and the right hand of Peter I rests on a cane. The Tsar is depicted in the uniform of the Preobrazhensky regiment with a ribbon and a star of the Order of Andrew the First-Called, in a triangular and bootforts, with a butcher in scabbards at the left side.

During the occupation of Peterhof, the sculpture was stolen by the Nazis, and it could not be found. According to the preserved author's model, a new sculpture was made at the Monument Sculpture factory and installed in 1957.
