Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Climbing the Avachinsky volcano

Description:

Avachinsky is the most active in the Koryaksko-Avachinsky group of volcanoes and is a complex double volcano of the Somma-Vesuvius type. Travelers from all over the world admire the striking similarity with the legendary volcano Vesuvius - the culprit of the death of Pompeii. The current cone "Avachi" is located eccentric inside the somme, which was formed as a result of a very strong eruption. The height of the volcano is 2751 m above sea level; a few years ago the crater had the shape of a funnel, with a diameter of 400 m and a depth of 220 m. In 1991, as a result of the eruption, the crater was almost completely filled with lava. The surface of the cone is mostly flat and only in the foretop part is complicated by the accumulation of lava, the consequence of eruptions. Currently, active fumaroles are used, which are confined to various areas of lava that filled the crater. The most powerful outputs are observed in the top part. Avachinsky volcano is one of the most accessible, and from its top overlooks the ocean, Petropavlovsk and volcanoes Vilyuchinsky, Gorely, Mutnovsky. In good weather, the snow-white cone of the Opal volcano in the south is visible, from the west the massive cone of the Koryakskaya Sopka volcano rises, from the north the valley of the Nalycheva River and the Zhupanovsky and Dzenzur volcanoes.
