Baranski volcano

iturup Island, Kuril Islands

Description:

The volcano got its name from the geographer N.N. Baranov, who conducted research on the Kuril Islands. The size of the Baran volcano is about 1000 meters. The sopka is a conical mound, which consists of a variety of rocks of basalt and andesites. The summit is decorated with a cropped crater. Its diameter is about 600 meters. All the walls and sides of the depression are neatly laid out with rare types of natural stones. The volcano has another crater located on the southwestern slope. It has mud boilers and thermal waters.

In history recorded many eruptions of Baransky. The most memorable and by the way the last was in 1951. Today, gases and occasionally volcanic dust come out of the hill.

Near the hill there is a power plant "Ocean". It was built in 2007.
