Ebeko volcano

paramushir island, Kuril Islands, Sakhalin region

Description:

Ebeko is a layered volcano with a size of just over 1000 meters. It is a huge cone-shaped mound consisting of andesites and basalts. The volcano formed more than 2,500 years ago.

At the top of the hill there are three craters. They have diameters of about 200 meters at a depth of 100 meters. They are at the bottom of a huge somme surrounded by high rocky sides. In each crater beat springs, geysers, and there are hot lakes of greenish-blue color. This color comes from a large number of chemical elements. Scientist K. Zelenov took a liquid for a sample and found iron, manganese, sulfur in it. All this “wealth” of the volcano with the help of mountain rivers and streams falls into the Sea of Okhotsk.

Like many other volcanoes of the Kuril Islands, Ebeko often erupted. Explosions have been recorded since 1793. There were nine of them. The last eruption seismologists recorded in 2010.
