National Theatre of Karelia

Russia, Republic of Karelia, Petrozavodsk, Karl Marx Avenue, 19

About the company:

The National Theatre of Karelia has existed since 1921. Its founders were Finnish revolutionaries emigrating to the Soviet Union. The initiator of the creation of the theater was Victor Linden, who once worked in folk theaters in his homeland.

The theater hosts performances in three languages: Russian, Karelian and Finnish. The National Theatre was one of the first in the country where special equipment was used for simultaneous interpretation. The repertoire of the cultural institution is designed for a wide audience from schoolchildren to venerable residents of Petrozavodsk.

In 1995, a global reconstruction began in the theater, which was completed only after 8 years. During the repair work, a large stage was built, which was equipped with modern equipment. The premiere performance, shown on the new stage after the reconstruction, was "Nummifars".

In 2012, the National Theatre of the Republic celebrated its 80th anniversary.
