Petrozavodsk

Holy Cross Cathedral

Karelia, Petrozavodsk, St. Volkhovskaya, 1

Description:

The famous Orthodox church in Petrozavodsk - Kerstovozvdizhensky is located on the territory of the oldest city Zaretsk cemetery. The construction of the temple is a huge stone building topped with five domes.

The temple was founded in 1852. At that time it was an ordinary wooden church, built on the money of the local merchant Pimenov, together with other patrons.

Like most Orthodox institutions, during the Soviet rule the church was closed to parishioners. However, during the occupation of the Finns in 1941, worship was restored and has not ceased since.

At the beginning of the XXI century, restoration work was carried out in the temple. The cathedral still houses the very first handmade iconostasis, which has not yet been fully restored.

Near the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross there is an eight-pointed cross, which the locals erected in 1725. The event itself was timed to visit Petrozavodsk by Peter I.
