In the historical center of Petrozavodsk in the Republic of Karelia is the Museum of Fine Arts. It is located on the once Cathedral Square, in an ancient stone mansion built in the XVIII century. Today, the building is listed as an architectural monument.
During its more than two-hundred-year history, educational work was constantly carried out in the museum building. At first, it housed a folk school, then the Olonets gymnasium for boys moved here. In the Soviet years, there was a Public Library, a cultural school and the Palace of Pioneers.
The expositions of the museum present works of ancient Russian painting, works of artists of the XVIII-XIX centuries, folk artisans, as well as collections of paintings of Western European art.
Most of the exhibits were transferred to the Karelian State Museum of Local Lore. Also in the replenishment of the collection, tangible assistance was provided by the Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage and other museums of Russia.
In addition to ancient paintings, the fund of works of modern Karelian artists is constantly completed.
Of particular interest to the guests of the museum is the exhibition of ancient icon painting, the exposition of folk art, as well as the collection of Tsybasov’s works.
