Mysteries of Mount Wottovaara

The route line: Petrozavodsk - Marcial Waters - Paleozerskaya HPP - Girvas volcano - Vottovaara - Petrozavodsk.

The ultimate goal of our trip is Vottovaara - a landscape monument of nature of regional importance. This is the highest point of the West Karelian hill - its height is 417.3 m above sea level. The plateau on top of the mountain with an area of about 6 square kilometers is remarkable for the accumulation of a large number of stones scattered in the most bizarre way.

According to one version, these stone clusters - "seids" of artificial origin, have a cult purpose and are directly related to the culture of the ancient Sami. In other words, the mountain is a pagan temple or “mountain of spirits”, a place of power, a bridge to the other world. This is due to the great interest in the mountain from the followers of various mystical currents. And it is with this that locals associate things inexplicable to humans, such as twisted trees growing in an unnatural way, as well as regular fires that occur here for unknown reasons.

Around Mount Vottovaara there are many legends and rumors, including rumors of ritual sacrifices in this area, various anomalies, such as frequent failures of electronics and equipment, frequent sightings of UFOs. There is another - the official version, according to which all the objects on the mountain are of natural origin and are the result of the activity of a glacier and a powerful earthquake that occurred here about 9000 years ago, and scattered huge blocks in the most unimaginable way.

All these incredible landscapes you can see with your own eyes, diving into the history of this ancient place. You can believe or not believe the myths and legends that go about this mountain, in any case, Vottovaara remains an interesting and unique natural object where everyone can find something special, open only to him. Everyone who has visited the mountain at least once wants to come back.

Tour programme:

07.00 - Departure from Petrozavodsk.

08.00 – Visit the first Russian resort Marcial Waters.

09.00 - Girvas village: inspection of the Paleozerskaya HPP and an ancient volcano.

09.30 - Movement northward towards Mount Vottovaara.

11:00 - Tea party in nature.

12.00 – Arrival to the southern slope of Vottovaara, trekking to the mountain, sightseeing.

17:00 - Dinner at the cafe.

17.30 - Departure towards Petrozavodsk.

21:00 - Return to Petrozavodsk.
