City Historical and Local Lore Museum ZATO Polarny

The City Historical and Local History Museum of Polarny was opened in the year of the 100th anniversary of the city of Alexandrovsk-Polarny. The main exposition tells about the history of the first commercial port on Murman; polar expeditions that left the Catherine harbor; the first scientific centers in the north of Russia: the Murmansk scientific and fishing expedition and the Murmansk biological station.

The city of military glory Polar is the cradle of the Northern Fleet, the main naval base of the fleet during the Great Patriotic War. In the postwar period, Polar was the base of the 4th squadron of submarines, later the main base of the Red Banner Kola flotilla of heterogeneous forces of the Northern Fleet. The main exposition, the department of military equipment during the Second World War and modern weapons (the Open Air Museum) contain unique exhibits, arouse great interest among visitors.

In addition, the museum has an exhibition dedicated to the Oleneostrovsky burial ground and the sites of a Neolithic man on Catherine Island in the Kola Bay near Polar. The exposition “Flora and Fauna of the Kola Peninsula”, created with the assistance of UNESCO, is very popular.
