Excursion "Monasteries of the Pskov land" (Spaso-Eleazarovsky, Krypetsky, Snetogorsk monasteries)
Description:
I offer a trip to three monasteries, which are located near Pskov (the most remote is a 45-minute drive).
St. John theological Krypetsky monastery was founded in the XV century among the impenetrable swamps by the Monk Sava, ascetic and wonderworker. Despite the fact that the monastery stood in the middle of the forest and there was no road to it, people came there constantly, even in the XX century, when the monastery was closed and stood in ruins. The monastery has now been restored. It can be reached in 45 minutes. You will see the temples forming a beautiful complex ensemble of the monastery, created in the era of John the Terrible and Metropolitan Macarius and consonant with it; climb the high bell tower, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area; walk to the Holy Lake, where you can collect water and, if desired, dip. You will learn about the history of the monastery, full of events, about interesting people who lived in the monastery, such as A. L. Ordin-Nashchokin - an outstanding Russian diplomat of the XVII century, an outstanding economist and statesman who took monastic tonsure in the monastery.
A 30-minute drive from Pskov, but in a different direction, is another monastery - Spaso-Eleazarovsky, which was founded in the 15th century by the Monk Euphrosin among the once-deaf forest. Many of his students became famous founders of other monasteries in the Pskov land. In the Savior-Eleazar monastery lived educated monks, among whom - Elder Philotheus, known for his message to the Grand Duke of Moscow, where he calls Moscow the Third Rome. You will get acquainted with the history of the monastery, which is replete with a variety of events. Closed in 1918 and ruined, the monastery is now reborn as a women's monastery. You will pass through the territory of the monastery, visit the grandiose Cathedral of the Three Saints of the XVI century for Pskov, where you will see venerated icons, among which the famous miraculous icon of the XIV century Savior Eleazarovsky is one of the only preserved ancient monuments of Pskov iconography. Near the monastery there is a holy spring where you can drink water or even dip.
The third monastery on our way is Snetogorsky. It is a 10-minute drive from Pskov. This is one of our oldest monasteries: the monastery was first mentioned in the chronicle in 1299. The main cathedral of the monastery - the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1311) became the ancestor of the Pskov school itself. The cathedral is included in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The best in Snetogorye is its world-famous frescoes created in 1313 by Pskov artists. According to emotional-expressive tension, in a free pictorial manner and theological revelations, they break beyond the limits of Byzantine models. The cathedral is open to visit in the absence of precipitation.
Among the famous people who visited the monastery at different times was the niece of the last Byzantine emperor Sophia Fominichna Paleolog. In 1472 she traveled from Rome to Moscow to become the wife of Grand Duke Ivan III. At the beginning of the XIX century, in the years of Mikhailovsky exile, the monastery was visited by A.S. Pushkin.
The history of the monastery is full of dramatic events - located west of Pskov, it was repeatedly looted, in the XX century it was turned into a sanatorium, and during the Great Patriotic War the monastery housed the German headquarters of the 18th army of the North group. Now the monastery has been revived as a female one.
Return after the tour tired but updated. If you want to shorten the program, you can visit two of the three described monasteries.
