Monasteries of the Pskov Land
Description:
The Pskov region is called Northern Palestine by the number of Orthodox shrines and saints. Today, there are more than ten monasteries operating in the region, and two in Pskov itself.
In Pskov, a stone's throw from the city center is one of the most ancient Russian monasteries - the Mirozhsky Monastery. In the Transfiguration Cathedral, frescoes of the middle of the XII century have been preserved.
On the outskirts of the city in a picturesque corner on the bend of the Great River from the XIII century stands the Snetogorsk monastery. The walls of the monastery temples remember both great glory and terrible devastation. Being a sea gate to Pskov, the monastery met eminent guests and stood in the way of enemy commanders.
In the vicinity of Pskov there are two very ancient famous monasteries.
In 27 km from the city on the river Tolbe since the XV century there is a Savior-Eleazar monastery. It was here that the Monk Ephrosin transferred the main shrine of the Orthodox world the Tsaregrad Icon of the Mother of God. In 2010, the wonderworking icon of the XIV century Savior Almighty Eleazarovsky returned to the Tri-Sacred Cathedral.
In the XIV century, among the swamps and deep forests 25 km from Pskov, the Monk Sava was founded by the St. John theologian Savvo-Krypetsky monastery. The relics of the saint are found and are in the monastery. The pages of the monastery history will tell about the fate of many ascetics: the Monk Nikandr-desert dweller, Neil Stolobensky, the fool of the Monk Cornelius. The outstanding historian Metropolitan Yevgeny (Bolkhovitinov) worked here, took tonsure from the famous Russian diplomat of the XVII century - Ordin-Nashchokin.
Monasteries are visited by pilgrims, tourists, and researchers. Some study architecture and history, come to ancient monasteries to work in monastic libraries with unique documents, others go on a trip to venerate the shrines, with trepidation and hope to touch the relics and miraculous icons, someone wanders to remote corners associated with turning events in Russian history.
Both of them plunge into an amazing, sometimes mysterious world, and no one returns from these trips the same.
