Pskov - Izborsk - Pechora - a large excursion in one day.
Description:
Pskov Principality for centuries was a western outpost of Russian lands and coming to Pskov you can plunge into the depth of centuries in one day, touching ancient fortresses, numerous monuments, ancient temples, and see the stunning nature of the Russian north-west.
What awaits us:
We will begin our journey in such a city of Pskov. At the beginning of the tour, we will visit the observation deck at the Olga Chapel and talk about who founded Pskov and when, and what is the role of Princess Olga in the history of the city. Then we will see the oldest preserved stone building in the city - the Cathedral of John the Forerunner of the XII century and talk about stone architecture, culture and a little about religion, how they developed in their interaction on the Pskov land.
We will continue our acquaintance with the city in the Kremlin and the Dovmontov city, where we will visit the Trinity Cathedral and talk about the political life of medieval Pskov, about who owned the full power, what participation the townspeople took in the administration and what role the princes played.
In the continuation of our excursion we will explore a number of buildings of civil architecture of the XVII-XX centuries, connected with the life of ordinary citizens, and with major historical events that affected the entire history of Russia.
We will finish our acquaintance with the city in the Pokrovsky Corner - in a place where for more than six months Pskov residents reflected the onslaught of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth troops at the end of the Livonian War, and having sustained it brought the long-awaited peace to the state.
Next, we will move to Izborsk, a city no less significant for Russian history than Pskov. In Izborsk, we will explore the Truvorovo settlement and admire the beautiful views of the Mal Valley with Gorodishchensky Lake, reach the Slovenian Keys and of course visit the Izborsk fortress of 1330. During this time, we will talk about Rurik and his brothers, about why Izborsk lost in the struggle for supremacy in these lands to Pskov and what military trials were destined to survive the fortress for centuries of border service.
From Izborsk we will go to Pechora - a place unique and stunningly beautiful. Pechora is a young city by the standards of Pskov region, but for its more than 500-year history, the Pechora Monastery as a spiritual center and the Pechora Fortress as a border stronghold managed to leave their bright mark in the history of Russia. In Pechora, we will look at the monastery from above from the observation deck and of course visit it inside (a visit to distant caves is possible if you send a request to the monastery in advance and get consent). Let’s talk about who and when founded the monastery, who and why built the most unusual fortress in Russia, how Ivan IV the Terrible reacted to this and what trials fell on the lot of the monastery already in the XX century.
