Pskov fortress through the centuries

Pskov is a fortress city, a warrior city. Since ancient times, the city, located on the western border of Russian lands, was at the forefront of military conflicts. But time after time, the fortress walls rescued the Pskovites, saving both from enemies from the West and from fellow tribesmen in internecine wars between the principality.

What awaits us:

This tour is intended for those who may have already visited Pskov with a sightseeing tour, and now wants to get acquainted with the military history of the fortress city. Walk along the city walls and towers, learn about how and when fortifications were created, from which enemies and when they saved the city, and several times the country.

On our tour, we will certainly not be able to get around all 9 km of fortress walls, but after walking from the Kremlin to the Pokrov Tower, we will be able to talk and see all the stages of the construction of the Pskov fortress. From the first stone wall in the city - Perseus Kroma, to the bastions built in front of the walls of the roundabout city on the instructions of Peter I, and became the final point of development of the Pskov fortress.

We will talk about the decades of wars waged by the Pskov Principality and the grandiose battles of the Middle Ages that shook the Pskov land. But the medieval battles did not put an end to the military history of the city. The XX century returned Pskov to the frontline of the war. The First World War led to the abdication of Nicholas II from the throne in Pskov, and a year later, on February 23, 1918, the Red Army conducted its first battle near Pskov. We will also talk about all this on our excursion, passing by the building, which housed the headquarters of the Northern Front, and the monument to the soldiers of the First World War.
