Memorial Museum-Reserve of A. S. Pushkin "Mikhailovsky"

Russia, Pskov region, Pushkinogorsky district

Description:

The memorial museum-reserve of A. S. Pushkin "Mikhailovsky" is located on the territory of the Pushkinogorsk district of the Pskov region. The museum-reserve in addition to the Mikhailovsky estate also includes other nearby objects associated with the name of the great Russian poet. Around the estate there is a park, the landscapes of which Pushkin sang in his works. It was in Mikhailovsky that Pushkin was formed, whose work became a truly national treasure for Russia. It is symbolic that it is here that the ashes of the poet who bequeathed to be buried in the Pskov land rest.

In 1911, a museum of the poet’s memory was created on the territory of the estate, which became the first such institution in Russia. In the same year, a colony for elderly writers was opened, which existed here until the revolution. The history of the museum dates back to 1922, and in 1937, in honor of the centenary of the poet’s death, part of the buildings of the estate was restored. Further restoration work was prevented by the Great Patriotic War. Moreover, as a result of fierce fighting, most buildings were destroyed or badly damaged.

Nevertheless, in peacetime, restoration work continued, which was largely facilitated by the personal initiative of the director of the reserve S. Geichenko. Today, the estate-museum is one of the main places of Pushkin routes. The local nature and the history associated with the poet annually attract thousands of tourists from all over Russia.
