Monument in memory of the Ice Battle

Monument in memory of the Battle of the Ice in the Pskov region, 3 km from Pskov, on Sokolina Hill.

The monument in memory of the Battle of Ice in 1242 was designed by sculptor I.I. Kozlovsky and architect P.S. Butenko. Later, sculptors A. I. Kozlovsky and R. S. Kirillov took part in the work. The basis for the creation of the project was the resolution of the CCCPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 21.01.1967, No. 58 "On the plan of construction in 1967-1970 monuments of national importance." According to the results of the All-Union competition held by the USSR MK in 1968, the All-Union Art and Expert Council for Monumental Sculpture approved the project of I.I. Kozlovsky and P.S. Butenko and recommended its further development. In 1969, the project was considered in the Pskov Party and Soviet organizations, discussed in the press and agreed by the Executive Committee of the Pskov Regional Council. On behalf of the Council of Ministers of the USSR to the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, the construction of a monument in the Pskov region was included in the plan of the 12th Five-Year Plan. The architectural part of the project with the placement of the monument on the Sokoliha mountain was developed in 1981, reviewed and approved by the Art and Expert Council, and materials for the monument-bronze and copper were recommended. In addition, the placement of the monument on Mount Sokolikha was recommended by the government commission of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, party and Soviet organizations of Pskov and approved by the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPSU. When choosing the place of installation of the monument, it was taken into account that the Sokoliha mountain is on the route of Alexander Nevsky's troops in 1242. The monument was completed and opened on June 24, 1993, on the day of the celebration of the 1090th anniversary of Pskov.
