Pokrov Tower
embankment of the Great River, Pskov, Pskov region, Russia
Description:
Pokrovskaya Tower is the most powerful part of the Pskov defensive complex. It was built in the late XV - early XVI century. At the time of its construction, it had no equal in Europe. The circumference of the Pokrovsky tower is 90 meters, and the height is more than 50 meters. The interior of the building has a five-tier division, at the base the thickness of the walls reaches 6 meters.
In the lower tier of the Pokrovsky tower are the entrances to the underground vaulted galleries. The wooden tent decorated the structure until 1995. The restoration of the building took place in 1955-1962. The tent of the Pokrovsky tower was recreated without a single nail, all the logs were fastened with brackets. In 1994, the coating of the structure was badly damaged by fire, the tent erected during the restoration partially burned down.
The tower is part of the Pokrovsky complex, which took the brunt of the 5-month siege of the city of Pskov by the troops of Stefan Batory, the Polish king. Pokrovsky complex is a monument of federal significance, thousands of tourists gather here annually to enjoy the greatness of the preserved buildings firsthand.
