Spaso-Eleazarovsky Women's Monastery

elizarovo village, Pskov region, Russia

Description:

The Savior-Eleazarovsky convent, founded in 1447, is known for keeping in its monastery the Tsaregrad icon of the Mother of God - a gift of the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Initially, it was a monastery founded by the Monk Euphrosyne, popularly known as Eleazar, in whose honor the monastery was named. It was a wooden church built on the mountain, which became a cemetery after the death of the founder, and the monastery was built under the mountain in the form of a stone three-sacred church and is a sample of Pskov architecture of the Middle Ages.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the monastery was the spiritual center of Pskov and during its existence was repeatedly attacked by Lithuanians and Poles, closed several times and was completely closed in 1923 - until 2000, when it was restored as a female one.

It is a white cubic-shaped temple, ending with a tent drum topped with one large and three small cupolas on the sides. The temple also has an attached low bell tower.

At present, the monastery is recognized as a monument of republican significance and includes a 16th-century three-priestly cathedral, a fraternal building of the 20th century and the ruins of a stone fence.
