Excursion to the Izborsky complex is one of the oldest Russian cities, first mentioned in the chronicle under 862. “From here is the Russian Land,” and here Russian statehood was born. For centuries, the ancient city defended the north-western borders, played a paramount role in preserving the Orthodox faith and the independence of the Russian state.
One of the main attractions of Izborsk is the fortress on Mount Zheravie, which was built in the 14th century and has reached our days in relatively good condition. It was from this fortress that Izborsk began its existence: for many centuries the fortress protected the western borders of the country. During the tour of the Izborsk fortress you can climb the battle course of the fortress and admire the beauty of the Izborsk-Male valley from the observation deck on the Lukovka tower, visit the Nikolsk Cathedral of the XIV century, see the famous Slovenian keys.
