Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Monastery
Pushkin Mountains, Pskov region, Russia
Description:
The Holy Assumption Monastery is famous for its most important shrine - the icon of the Virgin Odigitrius, which was found by the shepherd Timothy in 1566 in the vicinity of Voronich.
The monastery was founded by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1569 after a miraculous vision of the icon of the Mother of God by Timothy. First, the Assumption Church was built, to which later the aisles of Odigetria and Pokrovsky were attached. To this day, the fraternal refectory, two guardhouses, the abbot's house, a fence with the Saints and Anastassyevsky Gates have been preserved.
The monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church in 1992. Now there are about 25 novices who are engaged in agriculture here. There is also a church school in the monastery. Near the Assumption Church there is a necropolis in which A. Pushkin is buried.
