Chegem Falls
Description:
Chegem waterfalls are geographically located in the Chegem district of Kabardino-Balkaria. The time to go is approximately 2-3 hours. The closest city to the Chegem waterfalls is Pyatigorsk, from here it is about 2 hours one way. The farthest is Kislovodsk. Here the road will take about 3 hours one way.
The group of Chegem waterfalls is formed by 3 waterfalls. If you move along the Chegem gorge to the south, then the first, 2 km south of the village of Nizhny Chegem, will be the Small Chegem Waterfall, or Adai-Su (Maiden Spit). It is located on the tributary of Chegem - the river of the same name, which flows into Chegem on the right. The waterfall is located about 200 m from the road and looks like a huge stone trough created by nature - the waters of the Adaisu River fall on it. We will not be able to reach the waterfall by car, here we will have to walk along the bed of the Aday-su river. This waterfall is considered the most powerful of the whole group, and its height is about 30 m.
Further, to the south of the village of Khushto-Syrt, the Chegem cliff begins (Su-Auzu - "water from the throat") - the width of the gorge in the narrowest place decreases to 25 meters. Within this cliff are the Great Chegem waterfalls. The first waterfall opens on the Sakal-Tup River - the right tributary of the Chegem River. Like the first waterfall, it looks like a giant trough with water, only of a different shape and its water content is much lower than that of Aday-Su. You and I will see him from the car.
Finally, about half a kilometer to the south, opens the Main Chegem waterfall on the river Kayaarty, another right tributary of the river Chegem. It is considered the most unusual of the group of Chegem waterfalls, as it is actually a whole group of waterfalls. Part of the water falls into Chegem in the form of small cascades from a height of 50-60 m, the other oozes from crevices of rocks at the top of the wall. Falling from the ledges, the water breaks and turns into water dust, which, reflected in the rays of the sun, creates a sparkling rainbow picture. We will reach these waterfalls directly by car.
Another interesting point. If you go on this tour by bus, tourists drop off at the end of the village of Khushto-Syrt and then you need to walk about 3 km to the waterfalls and also 3 km back. Because buses cannot pass through the Chegem cliff. There are rocks hanging too low and only low buses (up to 18-20 people) can pass here.
On this excursion you can also try the national Balkar cuisine in one of the many cafes located in the village of Khushto-Syrt.
All visitors are required to bring Russian passports. During the trip there, we will cross the stationary traffic police stations 3 times and, accordingly, also 3 times back. In total, during the tour we will pass 6 posts. Here in the Caucasus stationary DPS is not the same as in Russia. It's much more serious here. For example, we will pass a federal post in the Malki area, where absolutely all trucks, all buses stop, and cars – selectively. All passengers of buses, including excursions, are registered.
In the summer, this tour can be held even if we leave at 16:00. Departure in winter, no later than 13:00!
