Oh. Roslavl

Roslavl under the ancient name Rostislavl was founded by Prince Rostislav Mstislavich as one of the strongholds of princely power in the newly annexed lands of the Radimichi, around 1137. Having arisen as a center of local administration, besides far from trade routes, Rostislavl in the XII century could not be a center of crafts and trade, the main inhabitants of the city were people of the princely administration.

Rostislavl lot could exist from 1197 to 30s XIII century. At the same time, we can say with great confidence that the prince sat in Rostislavl in 1197-1206, it is with these years that the economic growth of the city is associated. In 1610, the city submitted to the Polish King Sigismugd III, became part of the Smolensk Voivodeship of the Commonwealth. In 1623, Roslavl received the Magdeburg Law. Roslavl was returned to the Russian lands in 1654 by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich as a result of a successful military campaign.
