Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God

344007, Rostov-on-Don, Stanislavsky St., 58

Description:

The history of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, like many similar buildings, is rich and numerous events. The Cathedral is the main one in the Rostov diocese, and it also houses the episcopal cathedra of the region.

Simultaneously with the construction of the fortress of Dmitry Rostov, on the banks of the Don, the construction of a wooden church with a chapel began. In 1761 it was consecrated, and after a while it became a temple. But, after 20 years, the temple decided to move to the shopping area, where it stands today. In 1791, a fire struck the temple and it was completely destroyed by fire. Fearing the punishment of heaven, Rostovites on the same place build a new, but already stone temple.

Over time, the number of residents of the city increased, and the temple could not accommodate everyone, so in 1854 it was decided to build a new one on the same site. The patrons were local merchants Koshkin and Mikhailov. The architect of the new project was chosen by the then famous architect Konstantin Andreevich Ton.

There is an opinion that the Cathedral is an exact copy of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, but many do not agree with this statement.

In Soviet times, the temple was closed, and a zoo was organized in its place. But already in 1950 the Cathedral was renovated and reopened, in 1999 the bell tower was restored.
