Pokrov Square in the city of Rostov-on-Don
Russia, Rostov-on-Don, Pokrovsky Square
Description:
In the park part of the Pokrovsky Square there is a large number of attractions. But, of course, the main place is occupied by the architectural monument and the now functioning Pokrovsky temple. The history of its origin goes back to 1735, when a fortress was built near the present village of Starocherkasskaya. The church was later moved to a new location. During the Soviet era, the temple was destroyed. It was restored only at the beginning of this century.
Before the entrance to the square there is another no less attractive monument - a monument to the first water supply. The sculpture is rather tall and depicts a woman with a bucket who leans towards a column for water.
In 2007, near the Pokrovsky temple was erected a monument to Empress Elizabeth height of more than seven meters (sculptor Sergei Oleshnya).
