Rostov-on-Don

Monument to S.M. Kirov

Rostov on the Don, the intersection of Kirov Prost and Pushkinskaya Street, 1st Cavalry Army Square.

Description:

The monument, the work of sculptor Zalman Vilensky, was erected at the intersection of Kirov Prospect (formerly Bogatyanovsky) and Sadovaya Street, in 1939. This was preceded by the destruction of the Intercession Temple standing on this place. Granite cladding of the temple went to finish the pedestal for the monument. The height of the monument is 3.5 meters, weight is 2.5 tons. The inscription on the pedestal reads: "...The successes we have are really huge. Chort knows him, if humanly speaking, so want to live and live.

In the early 2000s, it was decided to restore the Pokrovsky temple in its former place. The monument was moved a little further, to the intersection of Kirov Prospect and Pushkin Street. There were rumors that the reason that the monument and the temple did not become neighbors was the word “chort” in the inscription on the pedestal. In addition, Kirov was an atheist and generally ambiguous figure, so the proximity of his monument to the temple would be inappropriate. Therefore, in its place, next to the rebuilt temple, a monument to Queen Elizabeth was erected.
