26 Sovetskaya Street, Starocherkasskaya St., Aksai District, Rostov Region, 346701, Russia

Description:

The Cathedral in Starocherkassk, located in the Rostov region, is a famous city landmark. It was originally built in 1650 from wood, but was rebuilt twice due to frequent fires. In this regard, it was decided to build a stone cathedral. Its construction took place from 1706 to 1719.

At that time, the Tsar allowed the construction of stone buildings only in St. Petersburg. However, there was a political need and Peter I helped the construction materially. There is also confirmed information that the site where the swamp was located was chosen for construction.

The height of the nine-domed cathedral is 49 meters, its architect is still unknown. The temple is decorated in Baroque style. Next to it was built a bell tower, whose height reaches 45.8 meters. On three sides of the cathedral was added a two-tier gallery. Despite the modest design of the temple outside, inside it amazes with its decoration. In the cathedral there is a library, which stores biblical and ancient secular books.
